Kärleken (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar #1)
Emotional work but mediocre writing.
Reading this book really hurts. It makes you feel furious, heartbroken and disappointed at the society and the way homosexuals were and still are treated. But this is not only a story of hate and deeply rooted pain, but also a story of love and acceptance. Gardell is a true poet and he delicately weaves together a book that touches your soul in every way possible.

This novel is the first in a trilogy by Swedens most famous gay man - stand-up comedian and serious novelist/playwright Jonas Gardell - about living through the 80s AIDS crisis as a young gay man in Stockholm. Its a fictional story, but also clearly a portrait of a lived experience, and the plot is interspersed with non-fiction passages about queer life in Sweden at the time, about the queer liberation movement that had led to the terms of that life, about the development of the AIDS epidemic.
Earlier this year I saw a wonderful heart-rending miniseries about two young men falling in love in Stockholm in 1980's. If you know your history, you can guess how it ended. I decided to read the books, and I'm glad I did. It isn't just the love story that's touching, it's the sections where the author describes real history, his own history and the history of Sweden and the world at that time. I kept flashing back to my own school years that came ten years later and comparing them to the sex
heartbreaking. but definitely an important reading in my life!
It took me more than I thought to finally write a review about this book.. when I first saw it, it was basically about the cover and the title and then reading the little summary in the back .. it was enough to catch my attention. So knowing a very little about homosexuality I wanted so badly to read this book. And I did.. ok so this book is a one of a kind testimony talking about a bunch of friends reunited by their sexual orientation towards the same sexe back in 80's years in Stockholm. It

Narrative To Books Kärleken (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar #1)
"They continue to walk. Hand in hand. It's snowing. They don't know where they're walking, or where they're headed. But right now it doesn't matter. Because every step they take in any direction is a first step in a new direction. It's snowing and snowing over Stockholm." When I was trying to find my favourite quote in this book, I realised that I hadn't marked any passages except for a paragraph at the beginning of the book, where the reasons and motivations for the book are discussed. This is a story about things that happened. People who existed. Lives that ended and tears that were shed. This is a masterfully told story about religion, identity, friendship, love, sex, shame, about so many things. It's so relevant and speaks freely and directly about the lives of the characters using beautiful and poetic language. It might sound odd to describe the style as both direct and poetic, as those two are rarely thought of as connected. But in this text it's the simply stated truth that is the most poetic. The narrative steps carefully, respectfully through the lives of the people it tells of. It speaks beautifully about ugly things. Terrible opinions, awful conduct, painful situations and abused feelings. Ruinous attitudes that made my stomach turn. This book demonstrates the importance of reading. To experience life from other perspectives, through someone else's eyes and hopefully learn from it. To expand our knowledge and the capacity of our hearts, in order to be more understanding of the world. I didn't mark any other passages in this book than that one paragraph, because it was too hard to pick out certain sentences that felt more relevant than others. This story in its entirety is beautiful, heart-breaking and important. Everyone should read it.Details Based On Books Kärleken (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar #1)

I've never underlined anything in a physical book, not even textbooks from school. But I did in this one. There were so many sentences that seemed to illuminate something secret and elusive in myself, that at times the breath would catch in my throat and I HAD to grab a pencil to underline these scary and wonderful sentences, so I could find them later to mull over.I've never really learned about what the AIDS crisis was like here in Scandinavia. That's one of the main reasons I picked this up.Emotional work but mediocre writing.
