I loved loved this book! The history is so rich. Really neat to learn about that era in Nashville. I wanted to be friends with the mansions staff and I just loved the relationship between the two main characters.Beautifully written story about a fascinating historical location. Great male leader and interesting female lead. It did slow a bit in the middle, but picked up nicely at the end.

While this book was alright overall, I was put off by a couple of things. The first was Sutton believing that his family's slaves owed them something after the war was over, and they were free. No matter what lies people tell themselves about slavery, there is no such thing as a kind slave owner. Freedom is kind. Paying people for their work is kind. Keeping families together is kind. It's completely different from her westerns, set in postbellum Tennessee, but Tamera's classic style shines through.
