Not as good as his full length novelsI love the Roy Grace books, and the Roy Grace stories in this collection of shorts were among the better ones, but sadly many of the others fall flat, sacrificing character development for squeezing in too much plot. Short story writing is a very different skill to full length novels, and much of this collection seems rushed.I hate short stories, so after Id bought the book, I was so disappointed to find I had bought a book of just that... short stories.... BUTthese are all typical Peter James, stories that pull you in and then twist right at the end. Because you dont have to invest in a novel, this book is so easy to pick up... read a couple of stories and then put down.. and carry on with life. A great read for a long distance plane or train ride, but dont expect any happy endings, a few gasps and laughs along the
I'm a crime fiction fan, but shockingly I had never read a Peter James book until now. I'm not normally a short story reader but these are a superb collection of short stories. This collection covers a variety of themes, some I enjoyed more than others, but isn't that always the way?Peter James has a brilliant writing style and I am now looking to read more of books from his extensive back catalogue. If you want an easy pick up and put down book and enjoy crime, supernatural, murder-mystery

I rarely read short stories but I'm familiar with Peter James so thought that I would enjoy this collection. However, even though I did enjoy the ones that features Roy Grace and the ghost stories I felt disappointed by the rest of them. My immediate thoughts were that he was trying to recreate Tales of the Unexpected by Roald Dahl but for me they were not as good. I persevered because of the ones that I did like but in future I will stick with the Roy Grace novels.
A good series of short stories - a great way to get to know the writings of Peter James
An excellent series of paranormal short stories, some of which I'm sure are conceptual to provide ideas for Peter's full length novels. The only problem was that I had to stop half way through when the name of one of my close family appeared as one of the characters which was a little unsettling. I may have to stick to his Roy Grace series in future.
